Title - Museum Interpreter

Compensation - $15/hour

Type - part-time; number of hours per week varies

Summary - The Virginia Beach Cultural Affairs Department seeks talented and motivated team players with a passion for history, education, and customer service to fill part-time roles with Virginia Beach History Museums! Our team members transform ordinary days into extraordinary ones.

Responsibilities 

  • Greet all guests in line of sight with a smile, a verbal greeting, and approachable friendliness.
  • Act as a host to each guest by demonstrating behavior that supports a positive, cheerful, and professional attitude.
  • Conduct research on the history on the City’s historic homes and apply that knowledge to give tours of the houses and museums in a friendly and engaging manner.
  • Answer phone and/or e-mail inquiries in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Register guests for tours and ticket sales during events using department’s point-of-sale system.
  • Help curate content for social media, ensuring its historical accuracy.
  • Assist in the development of educational programs from idea conception through writing of script or program materials, training, and then conducting educational programs for school groups (pre-school through college), Scout troops, senior citizen groups and other interested parties.
  • Staff special events and/or private event rentals as assigned.
  • Project a professional image while in uniform.
  • Adhere to all departmental policies and standards.
  • Embrace other duties as assigned.

Qualifications -

Outstanding customer service skills: high school diploma, college degree preferred; enthusiastic, motivated and enjoy working with people; cash handling experience a plus; excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability and willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions; commitment to cooperative teamwork; positive, can-do attitude required.  

Applicants must be able to work flexible shifts including weekends, nights and holidays and be available to work between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 9:15 p.m.
