Description: George Washington Foundation Museum Educators are responsible for
participating in the implementation of various types of programming for school groups and
younger visitors. These programs include fieldtrips, camps, and special events.
Educators may expect to work approximately 8-16 hours per week depending on staffing needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Help facilitate school tours, camps, and special events
Attend regularly scheduled staff meeting and trainings.
Commitment to expanding one’s knowledge, skills, and abilities through professional
development, provided resources, and independent research.
Remain informed of upcoming programs and events.
Other duties as required
Minimum Qualifications:
Interest in history
Demonstrated ability to teach and communicate with varied aged groups
Comfortable with public speaking
Commitment to telling histories from multiple perspectives
Commitment to explore and expand one’s knowledge of the past
Commitment to helping students connect with the past in meaningful ways
Good attitude and ability to work in a team environment
Highly motivated with an ability to adapt to change
Occasional weekend and holiday availability required
Values research-based content
Preferred qualifications:
Experience in education or work at museums/ historic sites
Some formal education in research, archelogy, history, historic preservation, 18th
century material culture, or education
Training Requirements:
Upon starting this position, educators will receive training materials
and will have the ability to tour both sites. Educators will also shadow programs and work with
the Youth and School Programs Manager on refining their skills before actually delivering
programming. Training is on-going and supplemental reading and activities will be provided or
recommended to further educator’s knowledge.
Physical Demands:
Museum educators must be physically able to stand or move around with a
group for an hour or longer and be able to climb stairs. Educators frequently walk outdoors
during hot or inclement weather. While performing the duties of this position, educators are
regularly required to reach with hands and arms, speak for extended periods of time to an
audience, work in comparatively noisy environments, listen, and sometimes move at a
moderate speed. Educators may need to lift and carry objects such as a small water cooler,
walkie-talkie, printed material, small reproduction items, or cleaning supplies. Reasonable
