Summary – The E. Claiborne Robins, Jr. Director of Education and Engagement manages the Education & Engagement Department which includes student and adult education programs and tours and community outreach, Visitor Services, Volunteer and Internship Programs. Major responsibilities include: cultivation of relationships with area schools, community organizations and adult groups; promotion of school programs and tours, adult programs and Richmond History Tours; supervision and leadership for the department’s education, volunteer and visitor services; development, implementation and evaluation of programming and interpretive educational resources; and active support of the front desk staff and museum visitor experience.
Responsibilities –
- Implement and coordinate the Valentine educational strategy and long-term goals.
- Develop programming and events that align with the comprehensive exhibition schedule.
- Oversee museum admission and visitor services with an eye for the museum visitor experience and access.
- Maximize partnerships with area public, charter and private schools, administrators, adult facilities, tourism bureaus, and community organizations, museums and institutions and seek opportunities to engage with educators.
- Create new and refine existing programming for audiences of all ages including students, teachers, adults and special interest groups, ensuring that mission based with community focused programming is offered.
- Ensure that student programming is SOL aligned.
- Supervise the hiring, training, and management of Valentine Educators and Tour Guides to ensure quality content and presentation of programs and tours.
- Collaborate with area institutions and school districts to offer professional development opportunities for area teachers and generate collaborative programs and presentations with area colleges and universities.
- Coordinate the First Freedom Center programming development and build awareness for Richmond’s role in the creation and signing of the Statute of Religious Freedom.
- Collaborate with the Public Relations to develop creative marketing strategies for programs on an ongoing bases, including quarterly programs and events mailers, student programs brochures, social media and email marketing.
- Identify and implement schedule of programs for adults, students and special audiences at the Valentine and First Freedom Center related to the museum mission. This includes the Controversy/History series and other special events and programs related to community outreach, exhibitions and mission with topics that are most important to Richmond residents.
- Collaborate with the Collections Department to develop interpretation plans and educational resources that increase access to exhibitions, the museum collection and Richmond history content through programs and digital web resources.
- Aid and assist in the promotion of programs and tours, based on the Valentine’s marketing plan.
- Work with Development to monitor and solicit funding for Education programs and Tours.
- Serve as consultant and/or collaborator to other departments regarding public programming components (i.e. for exhibitions, special events, and grant writing).
- Manage budgets and funding for Education and Tour departments.
- Serves as a member on Planning Team.
- Responsible for overseeing admission and programming attendance data, tracking progress and evaluation related to qualitative and quantitative strategic goals.
- Ensure the quality of customer service provided throughout department.
- Ensure the quality of the intern program.
- Attend Board of Trustees meetings as needed and provide reports and information as requested.

Qualifications –
- Master’s degree in education, history or art history preferred.
- Five or more years of experience in education, education program management and promotion, and community outreach programs.
- Self-starter with ability to work independently, be a team member, and lead a team.
- Ability to sell and promote programs and tours to various customers and excellent customer service attitude.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks and meet deadlines.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills required.
- Program and/or project management experience with ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Experience recruiting and supervising staff.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Computer competency, particularly with MSOffice Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and other database and scheduling software.
- Available to work nights and weekends as needed.
Physical Demands:
The Director of Education and Engagement must be able to use a telephone, computer keyboard and mouse; reach with hands and arms, speak for extended periods of time and listen. The employee is frequently required to walk and sit, as well as to lift and carry objects such as boxes, books and files weighing up to 40 pounds. The Director of Education and Engagement is occasionally required to stand, stoop or kneel. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision and the ability to focus.
