Summary – The Cultural Resources Associate is a full-time position (1 FTE) that will assist the Tribe’s Cultural Resource Department with the care and preservation of tangible and intangible Pamunkey cultural resources. The Associate will help manage the Tribe’s various Tribal Historic Preservation initiatives located off and on Tribal lands. The Associate will primarily work from the Pamunkey Indian Tribal Resource Office on the Pamunkey Indian Reservation in King William, Virginia. 

Responsibilities – 

  • Assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures for consultation processes regarding federal and state undertakings that may impact important cultural and historic resources off of Tribal lands to include the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), and other applicable federal, state, and/or local preservation codes and laws as necessary;
  • Perform grant management duties for grant funded programs to include monitoring and evaluation to ensure program success, programmatic reporting, financial reporting, and budget modifications/adjustments as needed;
  • Assists in the day-to-day operations of the Pamunkey Indian Museum’s collections and exhibitions;
  • Assists with maintenance of the museum’s collections inventory database and the Tribe’s digital archives;
  • Collaborates with the Cultural Resources Staff to develop and implement Cultural/History Education Programs to benefit Tribal Citizens;
  • Establishes and maintains a positive receptive interaction with Tribal Citizens to develop relevant programs and exhibitions that engage and serve the Tribal community;
  • Occasional evening or weekend hours will be required for special events or programming;
  • Additional duties as assigned.

  • Ability to perform detailed work with a high degree of accuracy and flexibility;
  • Ability to use tact, discretion, and courtesy in dealing with staff, Tribal Citizens, volunteers, and the public;
  • Highly effective when working independently and in a team environment;
  • Ability to respond effectively to management direction and adapt to frequent changes, delays, and unexpected events;
  • Able to learn and follow complex written policies, procedures and compliance guidelines;
  • Thorough knowledge of Native cultural material and variables throughout the United States, Virginia, and the surrounding region;
  • Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills;
  • Must have strong time management skills;
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive data, records, and files, etc.;
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and the ability to learn new software;
  • Ability to develop and manage electronic databases.

Qualifications – 

  • High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s Degree in History, Anthropology, Museum Studies, or similar field preferred
  • Preferred experience in working with Tribal governments and Tribal communities;
  • Deep understanding of museum ethics and the standards of collections management;
  • Demonstrated experience researching in collections and a commitment to working with stakeholders to achieve an equitable and inclusive space via collaborative exhibitions;
  • Experience in managing interns and/or volunteers.

Benefit Conditions: After completion of 90 days probation period.
