Summary – The Costume Shop Coordinator / Interpreter assists the Curator with managing the costume inventory, maintaining and coordinating supply and activity in the Museum’s costume shop, researching and making a variety of historic clothing to include all aspects of the costuming process, and overseeing the staff and volunteers working in the shop. Interacts professionally with internal and external clients. The position also requires occasional interpretation and demonstration of historic handicrafts to the visiting public and school groups and assistance with daily site operations especially during busy days.
Responsibilities – Knowledge of historic clothing and garment construction (sewing, reading and adjusting sewing patterns, cutting, alterations, etc.) and care of costume and textile collections; dependability, flexibility, positive and professional demeanor with outstanding oral and written communication skills; ability to interact effectively with all age groups; strong organizational and time management skills; ability to set and achieve goals; computer skills and familiarity with office software, internet search engines, etc.; basic research skills; ability to work as team leader or team member as assigned; ability to perform repetitive hand movement and fine motor coordination; ability to perform moderate physical labor and to lift up to fifty (40) pounds unassisted; ability to work outdoors in a full range of temperatures and weather conditions, and in smoky and dusty conditions; ability to project a positive, professional image to the public and peers at all times; positive and professional interactions with co-workers and volunteers, knowledge of interpretive principles and methods and cultural and social history a plus.
