Preservation Virginia seeks an enthusiastic and qualified Communications Manager to grow awareness of Preservation Virginia’s programs, services and historic properties. The Communications Manager is responsible for coordinating and implementing Preservation Virginia’s comprehensive marketing and public relations program, which includes electronic and print communications, media relations, advertising, promotions and community outreach. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Communications Manager will work closely with the management team and coordinate with the development team on messaging.
Qualifications: This position requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of experience in marketing and public relations. Demonstrated organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and ability to work with and motivate other professionals and volunteers. Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with particular attention to editing and accuracy. Ability to self-start and work independently with little supervision. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite including Publisher. Experience with multiple social media platforms and MailChimp or other email marketing programs. Familiarity with photo and video editing software.
Duties for the position include:
1. Coordinate the organization’s marketing and public relations plan and multi-platform social media program to increase awareness of the organization’s mission and influence; this includes monitoring compliance to branding guidelines, ways to support increased participation and revenue opportunities.
2. Using the communications calendar, manage Facebook, Instagram and YouTube for Preservation Virginia’s profiles. This includes creating and posting short videos highlighting special projects and programs.
3. Assist all departments and core sites with the promotion of programs and events through the coordination of print and promotion needs. Offer coaching and best practices for Preservation Virginia historic site social media channels.
4. Manage website updates for www.preservationvirginia.org. Work with the management team to determine content needs and secure copy and images as necessary. Brainstorm and collaborate with teams and various departments to generate new ideas and coordinate strategies for carrying them out.
5. Post programmatic content to the website for events and activities including calendar listings, scheduling and reservations.
6. Coordinate with all departments to ensure consistency in message and graphic image for all external communications.
7. Manage media relations and disseminate complete and timely information to print and electronic news outlets; respond to requests for information from news media ensuring press coverage for activities, conferences and programs; prepare press releases and PSA’s; schedule media interviews for the CEO or appropriate staff.
8. Promote the programs of the organization through appropriate paid and unpaid means.
9. Attend occasional evening and weekend events to capture photo and video content for marketing materials.
10. Develop a program for tracking results of marketing efforts.
11. Assist the development department with print and promotion needs as necessary.
12. Attend weekly staff and department team meetings.
13. Contribute to the effort to build a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.
14. Other duties as assigned.
Work Location and Schedule: The position is an on-site work position. Work is performed at the Richmond Statewide office, 204 West Franklin Street, generally Monday - Friday (8:30 - 5:00) with evening or weekend time required as needed for special programs and events. Some travel required, as needed to support the historic sites, programs and events.
