Title – Communications Coordinator 

Compensation – $16.50 per hour. Hours per week will average 15 hours. 

Type –  Part-Time, Hourly/Non-Exempt

Summary –  This position will ensure the museum has high visibility to the general public with regard to the museum’s online presence including social media and website. Additionally, this position will foster media relations and assist in writing press releases and coordinating news interviews. Finally, this position is responsible for generating content and graphics to be used for social media, website, newsletter, and paid advertising opportunities. 

Responsibilities

Website Development and Content Creation (5-6 hours per week):

  • Maintain website and ensure page content is up-to-date, including website event calendar
  • Increase audience engagement with respect to online foot traffic to the website
  • Design and create marketing materials including event fliers, postcards, and infographics and ensure museum messaging is presented in an engaging and consistent manner with respect to branding 

Social Media Management (4-5 hours per week):

  • Manage the museum social media accounts and expand museum channels/platforms as applicable
  • Create and schedule social media postings across museum platforms
  • Serve as the museum point of contact for all inquires received on social media platforms
  • Monitor audience engagement and identify content and strategies to increase followers 

Newsletter and Communications (3-5 hours per week)

  • Manage the museum newsletter by generating, packaging, and distributing membership announcements in addition to other museum updates through email marketing
  • As required, take a lead role in marketing mailers to museum members and the general public
  • Identify new advertising opportunities within the parameters of the marketing budget
  • In coordination with the Public Programs Manager, assist with member-specific communications 

Physical Requirements: The Communications Coordinator must be able to stand for long periods of time and climb stairs. He or she must be able to assist in carrying and lifting objects weighing up to 25 pounds

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred. Preferably in Marketing or Advertising, Business, Public Administration, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or Non-Profit Management, but not required in one of these fields of study. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will have a flexible schedule. He or she must be able to work well in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment and be comfortable as a self-starter, taking initiative. The ideal candidate will also have exceptional interpersonal communication skills, writing skills, and time-management. Adaptability to changing circumstances is important. Previous work experience in a museum is a plus. Working one Saturday afternoon approximately once a month is required. Other preferred qualifications include: 
    • Experience in website and content development, with familiarity in SquareSpace
    • Working knowledge of email marketing with experience using Constant Contact and Past Perfect
    • Experience and comfort within graphic design and familiarity with programs such as Canva
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
    • Past Experience in social media management including Facebook, Instagram, and Linkedin
